1920 – Present

Timeline

1920

Founded in Milan

Cinemeccanica is established in Milan, Italy. The company begins manufacturing film projection equipment for the growing silent cinema industry across Europe.

1930s

The sound era

With the arrival of sound-on-film, Cinemeccanica develops projectors and sound heads for the new talking picture format. Italian cinemas convert rapidly through the decade.

1950s

Widescreen and CinemaScope

The widescreen revolution demands new aperture plates, lenses, and projection standards. Cinemeccanica adapts its machines for CinemaScope, VistaVision, and the emerging anamorphic formats.

1960s

70mm and large format

The introduction of 70mm exhibition — Todd-AO, Super Panavision, Cinerama — requires projectors capable of handling the larger gauge. Cinemeccanica builds machines for both 35mm and 70mm from a single platform.

1970s

Dolby and magnetic sound

Dolby noise reduction transforms cinema audio. Cinemeccanica integrates optical and magnetic sound systems into its projectors, supporting the new multi-track formats that define the decade.

1980s–90s

The multiplex era

The rise of the multiplex drives demand for reliable, serviceable projection equipment. Cinemeccanica supplies projectors to cinemas across Europe, South America, and beyond.

2000s

Digital transition

The industry shifts to digital projection. Cinemeccanica continues to manufacture and support film projectors for the venues — repertory cinemas, archives, film schools — that remain committed to the film format.

2010s

The Victoria 8 70mm Revival

Cinemeccanica continues production of the Victoria 8 for Boston Light & Sound to provide solutions for new releases in 70mm. Several theatres in the United States are equipped with brand new V8s.
